Memorial Day

A Reflection on Selfless Service and Leaving a Lasting Impact

Written by our COO and Veteran, Krysta

Memorial Day holds a profound significance for those who have served in the armed forces, as it serves as a solemn reminder of the sacrifices made by brave men and women who laid down their lives in service to their country. As a graduate of West Point and a former engineer officer who completed multiple deployments in the Middle East, Memorial Day resonates deeply within me. It serves as a time to reflect on the importance of selfless service, the lessons learned, and the impact we can make on the world.

My years in the military taught me invaluable lessons about selfless service. It was through the dedication of countless soldiers that we were able to bring stability, hope, and infrastructure to remote areas of the world. As an Engineer Officer, I witnessed firsthand the transformative power of our work. Building roads, airfields, and utilities in regions that lacked even the most basic infrastructure not only enhanced the lives of local communities but also fostered stability and economic growth.

Being a female officer in charge of a predominantly male platoon added another layer of complexity to my military experience. In a traditionally male-dominated field, I faced unique challenges and opportunities. Breaking down gender stereotypes and earning the respect and trust of my platoon required perseverance and a steadfast commitment to excellence. It was crucial for me to lead by example, demonstrating that gender should never be a barrier to effective leadership. Through open communication, mutual respect, and a shared sense of purpose, I was able to foster a cohesive and high-performing unit, where every Soldier's abilities and contributions were valued, regardless of gender. My experience as a female officer reinforced the importance of diversity and inclusivity in the military, reminding me that true strength lies in embracing our differences and working together towards a common goal.

One of the most profound aspects of military service is the notion of leaving a place better than when we found it. This mindset was ingrained in us as Engineers, and it transcended the physical projects we undertook. We aspired to build more than just structures; we aimed to create lasting connections with the people whose lives we touched.

Whether it was working alongside local laborers to construct a remote outpost or collaborating with community leaders to design sustainable solutions, we understood the significance of building trust and fostering meaningful relationships. These bonds not only strengthened our collective mission but also paved the way for long-term progress even after we departed.

On Memorial Day, we honor the fallen heroes who made the ultimate sacrifice, ensuring that the freedom and values we hold dear endure. It is a day to pay homage to the selflessness and courage displayed by these individuals who stepped forward to defend our nation.

As Veterans, we carry the memories of our fallen comrades with us, not just on Memorial Day but every day. We remember their selflessness, their unwavering commitment, and their dedication to a cause greater than themselves. Through our remembrance, we keep their spirit alive and carry their legacy forward, vowing to honor their sacrifice by continuing to serve and make a positive impact in our communities.

On this Memorial Day, let us remember and honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice, while also reflecting on our own commitment to selfless service. May we carry their legacy with us as we strive to make a positive difference in our communities, leaving a lasting impact that honors their memory and continues to shape the world for the better.
